A REAL housebank

a994 Carver 390 CPMY. Battery dedicated to the generator, and 2 others on the MBSS. Just 12v deep cycle batteries. I had a REAL house bank on my last boat, which consisted of 4 6V golf cart batteries on 1 position of the switch, and a starting battery on the other position. With the limited space I have, I was wondering if a house bank of 2 6V GC batteries, hooked up to be a 12, would fit where the batteries are now? Or would it be a better idea of using a couple of 4 D's, and keeping the dedicated generator battery. I used to stay on the hook and the GC batteries would runt the fridge for over 48 hours. I am unsure how long my fridge would run on this single 12V battery that came from the factory even if I ran the genny an hour in the AM and same at night. What has others with this type boat done for a real house bank?

I am a big believer in GC batteries and have them in my 405 as housebank I have a larger bank than you mentioned you used I am on year 9 with them. I also use a victron battery monitor and high output charger. Remember to make your batteries last they should not be discharged below 50%. If your 12v battery is a group 27 it has a reserve listing of around 105ah the trojan T105 is rated at 225ah so you would double that capacify with just that change. GC are easier to move around than 1 larger D size 12v which also a consideration for me. I don't know what charger you have but if it's not a high amp running the gen for 2 hrs a day
as you mentioned won't do a lot to recharge the housebank I would really look into duplicating your other housebank if your are wanting to replicate your previous boating experience.

I/M/O you should be able to set in 2-GC batteries for 1-Deep Cycle battery. But as a good rule of thought, measure twice before installation attempt! Mike

I was limited for space also but decided to open the wallet a little more and get tall GC batteries. Not that the footprint is any bigger but the height is much more than your everyday 6v. 2 of these give you the equivalent of a 435ah 12v bank or about the same as a 4 bank 6v standard size will give. http://www.ebay.com/itm/TROJAN-L16H-AC- ... 2003268211

Gotta ask Hans, those are somewhat heavy at 120lbs or so, how did you move them around, I have enough trouble with the 70 lb ones.......

I am a fairly husky guy although a little whiter and wider than I like, no issue lugging them around for me. Maybe in a few more years I may need some help. Going on 59
