Solar System

Post by cyclebender »

I am in the process of adding a 30 watt solar system on my boat. I intend to connect the output from the system to the house batteries. Should I disconnect the battery charger from the batteries, or just turn the charger off? Does it make any difference?
Thanks for any advice

I would venture to guess it depends on the charger. If you have a smart charger it should be no problem, otherwise you may boil them over! Mike

Do you mean 300 watt per chance instead of only 30watts? If so maybe you post what you are installing for some other interested carver boaters happy new year

I guess the question is what are your intentions for the solar panel? Is it to charge your bank while at the dock? If so, why? Why the panel instead of the on-board charger? If the panel is for charging while at anchor, then that makes sense. Having said that, if you don't have a smart on-board charger, you may be better off with the panel doing the charging during the week as long as the panel's charge controller is a smart one.

30 watts is only 2.5amps in a perfect solar world, wont get that in real life usage. hoping he means 300 if trying to charge batteries
