Cockpit drains

We recently purchased a 1993 390 and noticed that we had about four gallons of water in the bilge that would not go away no matter how many times we shop vacuumed the rear bilge.
After much angst and cogitation, our broker came by and had a long look. We discovered that the cockpit bailers, of which there are two on each side were suspect. There are two convoluted hoses on each side that are factory installed with hose that would appear not to be certified for submersion continuously.
They are 2 inch hoses that lead aft through the transom and bail above the water line. Normally, this would not be an issue, however our dinghy is a 12 foot RIB with a 20 hp Yamaha all told about 500 pounds tilting the vessel ever so slightly to starboard. On a calm day, the bailers are above the water line but if a little lumpy, water will slosh in and out of the bailers regularly. This would not normally be a problem unless the hoses had become brittle and cracked with age as ours apparently had. Took about three months to find, and we replaced all four with exhaust hose certified for below water line. a bit of a knuckle buster but only took about two hours . All four o the original lines were cracked. Could have sunk the boat! This likely is not Carver specific but would likely apply to any boat with a rear cock pit with scuppers just above the water line and a heavier than normal dinghy.
Yikes! Time to check your bailer hoses!
