crank mounted raw water pumps

Thought I would start a separate thread.......what are the pros and cons of this style pump?.....anyone retrofit these? There has to be better than those pulley driven, plastic, hard to get a pump designs......are there any kits available for mercruiser etc?...what say you folk......

Gee, I think I have seen models that are brass or metal and not plastic. Must be a replacement.

What happens if/when the direct coupled pump seizes?
At the very least, a belt offers some protection.

Nope , these are OEM plastic housing raw water pumps......I believe quite common......I have spares with merc right on them.

Where do you boat? I've heard some say that brackish and salt water are murder on them, but I didn't see it.

Had my 1988 2807 with Mercruisers impossible-to-get-at pumps in Lake Michigan, 3 years on the Chesepeake Bay, and 3 years in the Pacific Ocean. Never had to replace a plastic housing.

My Cougar has Mercruiser pumps on them and they serve those big engines just fine.

Great lakes, I am getting older and have some health issues ( back) , so if I can make maintenance a lot more easy I am all for it, as for the pump seizing, I couldn't answer that.....
