Carver 530 Voyager

Post by enproep »

Hello, I have twin diesel's in my 530 Voyager that are 17 years old with only 950 hours on them. They run great, but I've recently noticed seawater dripping at the end cap of the port heat exchanger (1 drop every 5 to 10 seconds). My mechanic is recommending I replace both heat exchangers as well as service the aftercoolers and transmission coolers. My question is, does anyone have experience/comments on this? Can the leak be patched with JB Weld? What are the ramifications of letting it go for awhile. Heat exchangers, aftercoolers and transmissions were serviced 5 years ago (approx. 300 hrs ago). Thank you in advance for help/advice. Bob

Well u could exchange them out or take it out to have repaired, if there is enough material to work with for a good repair. Then again it could just need to be re-soldered? I would think any good radiator shop would give you a good idea which way you should go! Try some flex seal tape on it!

It's possible you just need to reseal the end cap. I would try that first. Taking the heat exchangers off and having them serviced is fairly inexpensive.

It would help if we knew what power plants we're dealing with. Volvo TAMD? Which one?

Sorry, my bad. They are Cummins C series, 8.1 L 450 HP.
They look pretty straight forward to remove, anyone know if that's the case?

If it is the end cap on your "heat exchanger" they are available as replacements,

http://www.mrcool.us/end-cap-4-inch.html

If it is the "after cooler" these won't help, but after cooler parts are available also.

I think it's better to get it replaced.

I also had a slow leak on one of my heat exchangers
A new end cap fixed the problem $40. Got to be worth a try before pulling the exchanger.
