Looking for a gear linkage for a 1988 Voyager 28

Post by Darkfaythe »

Hi all

I dont know if this is the right place to be asking this but I have a 1988 Voyager 28 with twin Chev 305's and V Drives.

One of the linkages from the V Drive to the prop shaft is bent and I'm trying to find a replacement.

It is a Walter V-Drive with 1 1?4" shaft and standard SAE taper with 5/16" key.

Does anyone have any suggestions please?

Cheers

Rob

Hi Mike
I have attached a graphic from the manual outlining the prop shaft coupling and thats the bit that seems to have worn 'out of true' from when the previous owner put it in crooked.
I can access this from in the boat so no problem there and its currently on its mooring anyway.
Hope this helps. I can photograph the segment when I go over the to boat on the weekend if necessary though.

Cheers

Rob

If it is the shaft coupler you need they are replaced by supplying the specs:
Shaft size
Flange diameter
Couple type, tapper, split, reverse taper, etc.
Transmission type

A good prop shop should match a replacement. Go on line and search "inboard shaft coupler"

Hi

Thanks for that. Both myself and my mechanic have been unable to find anything here in New Zealand hence my trying a little further afield.

It is a Walter V-Drive with 1 1/4" shaft and standard SAE taper with 5/16" key.

Cheers

You're looking for a shaft coupler. Like dsolo said, a good prop shop should be able to help and ship one to you. Maybe one of the guys here from the States can recommend a good shop on this side of the pond or you can try United Propeller in Ontario Canada: http://www.unitedpropeller.ca/ ask for Amanda, I deal with her all the time, she knows her stuff. You can also try the Walter Machine Co. http://www.waltergear.com/.

If it's in the condition you describe, unfortunately you may need to dress/machine the tranny flange. If it's warped as a result of the coupler's condition, you need to make sure that gets corrected first. It would have to come off and sent into a shop to be refaced or you'll still have a vibration no matter what you do.

If all else fails in your search, I would probably take both sides of the coupling to a machine shop, I am sure they could make that stuff up for you....they understand taper fits etc....just a thought..... :beergood:
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

Yes, I know what you are suggesting. I have already done that with the prop shaft. THat has been machined spot on before re fitting it into the boat as I replaced the stuffing box at the same time, so its just the shaft coupler now. I am following up on the suggestions above for that right now.

Ok, glad all worked out. When you first said linkage instead of coupler I was puzzled. It concerns me how that got so out of shape to begin with, whatever it has to be fixed now. Good Luck!
