I agree on the generator group 31 being way overkill. Mine was dead as a doornail and decided to order a group 24 AGM from Costco. This is what I ended up with. http://www2.exide.com/bm/en/product-sol ... rpose.aspx

I'm sure you could use a smaller battery for the genset, and it will most likely work well. I like to have them all the same, maybe just a bit OCD, but if needed (genny wont start, charger bad etc) I could move the genny battery to replace one of my others and start up to get back home.

I Have a 390c PMY with the same 3 battery set up. I removed the battery from position #2, and replaced with 2 6V golf cart batteries making a large 12V. We anchor overnight and the refrigerator and lights only use 15% of the bank. I start generator in morning and evening for 90 minutes and top off to 100%. To recap, MY position 1 is a group 31 start battery, position 2 the house battery and the independent generator battery. Works for me!
