Well I have cooked my water heater element. Stupid mistake and I will skip the details. Suffice to say trying to do to many things at once!!!.
It is an Atwood 11 gallon. I got on their web sit and found the exploded drawing of the heater and it looks like a pretty straightforward repair. I think the hardest part of this will be getting my 6'4" frame into where the heater is LOL. I ordered the element which was in stock at my supplier... he told me they always keep 15 or so in stock!!! It seems I am not alone in this plight.
We are off to Pointe Au Baril this weekend so I want get it fixed so the Admiral does not have to endure a cold shower.

I've been in that forward bridge cavity myself. Kudos for tackling the element replacement on your own. Never done that particular job. Can you post a few photos and description of the procedures? Thanks and good luck.

I thought I should wrap this one up. I ordered and replaced the heater element.... Sorry it was way to tight in there to get any decent pics.
I filled up the heater and!!!! no hot water. After some poking around with a meter I found out that the element was not getting any power. I backed my way up and found that there was power at the over temperature safety switch but nothing coming out of the thermostat. Both of these come as an assembly from Atwood so I ordered it, installed it, and presto we are back in business. Below is a link to the manual which has a really good exploded drawing of the heater. Total cost for parts for this repair was $42 for the element and $20 for the switch assembly.

I have a Seaward hot water heater. The element is screw in type and replacement can be purchased at Canadian Tire....$30.00.

If your heater also is heated by the freshwater cooling and your boat is running hot (impeller going bad etc), you can trip the high limit.
If you do have a failed element, you can use any 120 volt water heater element. You just need to know if you have screw in or bolt in and the wattage.
About $12 at home depot or lowes.
