Want to replace microwave with electric convection oven
My 1992 Carver 33 aft cabin came with electric burners and a microwave oven underneath. I rarely (if ever) use a microwave, and would much rather have a convection oven in its place. Any suggestions?

Re: Want to replace microwave with electric convection oven
Now I don't really know much about convection ovens, but I think past the size issue of does it fit in the hole left by the microwave......I think the question for me would be how to deal with any heat produced by this appliance in the space you are putting it.....might be just fine but........

FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

I believe your boat originally came with, or had the option of the princess convection oven with three burner cook top.

Re: Want to replace microwave with electric convection oven
I too did the same on my previous boat and also the Carver. The best unit out there by far is a Breville smart oven. Will handle a 13" pizza easily and the stove actually works as well if not better than your household full size. Take a look at my pictures in my signature. Here is a link to the Breville stove, not cheap but the best there is. https://www.amazon.com/Breville-BOV800X ... B001L5TVGW
One thing to keep in mind. No compact oven is meant to be enclosed. I was able to do so as the area behind mine is open. On my previous boat I actually installed a heat shield, a thermostatic with and a fan to be able to make the installation safe.

Re: Want to replace microwave with electric convection oven
What about a microwave / convection oven combo? I am thinking about replacing my microwave with that option.

Re: Want to replace microwave with electric convection oven
Never saw one that actually works well enough to be either considered a microwave or an oven. Think about it for a minute, if this was so good, everyone would have one in their home as the combo is rather perfect IMHO. Must be something to do with the shielding/steel heating elements/microwaves that do not mix well together.
That being said, bought one for my previous boat which was a POS and was quickly replaced by a small toaster style oven and there was one in my Carver from the factory which was OK at best. Both were thrown out.

Re: Want to replace microwave with electric convection oven
Really depends on your circumstances and boating style. In the three cruisers we've owned over the last 40 years, we've used an oven twice. We don't like heating up the cabin at port even with the air on but even less at anchor where we spend a lot of time. We cook everything on the bbq. The microwave is definitely used but only for certain things and because of the short cooking/heating duration they offer, they're perfect for on the hook boating unless you usually run your generator for hours on a weekend outing. We prefer the bbq and plan our meals accordingly, some cooked from scratch on the bbq and some made at home in advance and warmed up in the MW.
I suppose it's good to have both options but be certain you will use both otherwise you're wasting your money in a combo unit which carries a higher price tag. While the combos are getting more affordable, be careful, you get what you pay for. The cheaper combos are known to break down much faster than their separate counterparts. Do your homework, check feedback on-line and you'll find this to be the case still, more so now as they are not as robust as the units made years ago though they'll come with more bells and whistles. Higher end product, though more costly seems to have better feedback but you pay for it so if you don't have a decent budget, I wouldn't bother with the combo.
