Kohler 9C63 gas genset governor pulley

Post by Grady2011 »

So I just bought the boat and the genset runs smooth but it idles up and down at a nice slow pace but when a load hits it like a ac compressor it Boggs it down for a second and it eventually catches itself.

So actually found the manual for it the book and I just happened to notice it is missing the governor assembly and pulley.........

Anybody know anybody or know a good place to seek help? I originally thought it might have just needed a carb job. Now I am realizing that this is my real problem.... :banghead:

Don't recall seeing this thread. Did you ever correct this? Did a governor solve the problem?

No sir I haven't. After crawling down into the bilge I found that it has a old electronic governor that someone has tried to make work. Talked to Kohler's guru and he said good luck on trying to get the electronic one to work and that I need to find the an old mechanical one to put back on it...

Kinda of a derail on the thread here, but speaking of governors - y'all know where the term "balls to walls" came from?

On a steam engine, there is a vertically mounted spool valve connected to pivoted spinning scissor-like assembly, with two balls mounted at the other end of the arms. so the faster it would spin, the farther out the balls would pivot. When the operator would want to moderate the speed of the engine, he would spin down a stop that would allow the spool to be lifted only so far. If he wanted full speed, he'd unscrew the stop, and the balls would spin straight out, or to the walls - the fastest the thing could go.
Thanks
Fred

That’s kinda how this mechanical governor works from my understanding.

But it’s in a pulley though.
