dash removal (fuel guage)

Post by Iguana »

I have a 87 Mariner that had a fuel guage that was working on only 1 tank when I got it - appears to not work at all now. Simple question - how is dash removed? I dsee one plastic plug on the top of the dash - is that it?

Are you sure it's the gauge? If it was working on one and not the other, I would suspect the sensor or wiring on the non-reading tank. If it's now not working on the other, I'd suspect the same issue that affected the first tank are now affecting the second tank

The dash may not be removable. You might just have to access it from below, though a panel. On my boat (83 3607) there is a section below the dash that's removable (where you put your feet when piloting) and you have access to the back of everything on the dash

The foot hole is removed to get to the backside of the panel. Maybe 10-15 screws. May have covers on them Just pop them off and use a screwgun to remove all the screws.

Carver glue wood on the backside of the flange those screws go through. On my boat, the wood fell off when I unscrewed the screws. The wood was shot, so I redid all of that so the screws have some bite into wood.
Thanks

Check the connection at the tank. One of my fuel gauges quit working year before last. First thing I did was to check the connection at the tank. I disconnected the wire(s) and wire brushed the connection on the tank and the connectors on the ends of the wiring to the tank. When I reconnected the wire the gauge worked.

If that had not worked my next plan would have been to check the connection at the gauge. Hopefully it is something simple.
