80s 3697 Generator Location

Qr Bbpost The ac line from the genny runs along the forward wall of the engine room to the starboard side, under the boats power inlet. Inside the cabin, in theaft starboard seat area is this little compartment that houses the automatic switch between shore and genny power.

So the Carver I bought has this box under the seat. Could this box do anything else or in addition to housing the transfer switch?

That looks exactly like my transfer switch box.
Follow the wires. Maybe the word are already on the forward wall ready for a genny.

Yes! It does! Perhaps I worded that badly. I mean to say: is there any way that my boat would have this box if it didn't originally have a generator?

It's possible. I have a number of cars, some really, that had wiring in them for non existent accessories.
Climb into the center of the engine bay with a small flashlight, if you go slow, you can actually get over the transmission and almost to the outside. From there you should see the wires from the power inlets, the wires from the relay box to the breaker panel, and probably a coiled up wires that would go to the genny.

Well that's one less thing to do when I add the gen. If the sea cock is there I'll feel much better, though!

Another question: Does the genset use the same exhaust exits at the engines, or it's own, through the hull?

No.I posted a picture. The exhaust goes out its own fitting under the swim platform.

One thing I might consider if I was going to install a new gen.....consider an 1800 rpm model,as opposed to the 3600 rpm ones....the 1800 are quieter ,easier on parts etc....good luck man....

Can anyone tell me what the hull thickness is in the rear between the stringers? I'm looking to add a through hull raw water pickup for the future generator before we launch the boat on Tues/Wed and need to order the correct size and length.

Fred: Would you be able to get me a few measurements on the location of the through hull in the picture you posted? Distance from transom, from stringers, side of boat etc.? I can't orient myself exactly as to which is front and rear.

Also, what size is the through hull, 1" or 1-1/2"?

I dont think you will need more than a 3/4 valve....be sure to get bronze valves and fittings. Cant help with the hull thickness, sorry........
