Question about using the generator

Alright, this may be the winner for dumbest question of the week. We are finally ready to move our new (to us) 3807 from one side of the state to the other, to get it close to home. Looks like it will be about a two day trip. Wife has come up with a menu that will require mostly heating with a microwave, but maybe a little oven work too. Is it ok to run the generator and be in the galley cooking while underway? Additionally, should we run with the forward hatch open for fresh air? Previous owner said he never operated from the lower helm so he didn’t know about all the exhaust and air current stuff you read about.

No problem running the genny and cooking while underway. Whether you get an exhaust back-draft really depends on a few variables. You really won't know until you try it. Mine has a completely enclosed bridge and aft deck with side doors. With the vinyl windows rolled up, I've never gotten a back-draft while underway. Your setup might be different and affect whether back-draft will be a problem for you. The exhaust ports on the 3807 may also have a bearing on minimizing the effect. Providing conditions allow, I always run with the bow hatch open but now to keep a back-draft at bay, it's mainly to air out the cabin.

Vicb.....maybe a good idea for you would be to buy some new CO monitors with the digital readouts, then you can monitor what is going on and stay safe on your trip while you get used to the boat....good luck on your trip.

My wife has frequently done it. You shouldn't have a problem. Extra safety precaution to leave open the forward hatch.

X2 on opening the front hatch - but you don't have to have it fully open... You should have CO detectors in the galley and sleeping areas. If the CO detector goes off, open the front hatch fully. I've run a lot with the genny on while underway cuz sometimes the folks visiting from "up there" want the A/C on cuz they think it's hot outside. We are thinking it's pretty normal - just have a cold beer and relax...

A wise man, my Grandfather, once told me there are no dumb questions. He said the dumb question is the one you don't ask. There are lots of knowledgeable members here with lots of Carver experiences.
