Huck I agree with 'the crew'. If the boat is on the 'hard' the main circuit switch should be turned off or the batteries disconnected. (Assuming you are not connected to power). If sitting at a dock or on a mooring, the main should always remain on, we must keep the bilge pumps energized. It's possible that one of the bilge pumps was draining the system due to a short or malfunction. Actually, it could have been anything, but with the main turned off or the batteries disconnected, the problem would likely be avoided.

On most boats, the main being "off" will not deenergize the bilge pumps, O2 detectors, volt meters and usually the windless. If you want to be sure, disconnect the batteries.

If you wind up getting new batteries, consider buying them from a truck parts warehouse. Truck parts - unlike boat parts - are very competitive and sell at a low markup. Also truck batteries are made to withstand more shock and vibration. I can get group 31 HD batteries from my local truck parts warehouse here in Charlotte for $69 each. That's a deal and I have had very good service from them - as good or better that the marine lead/acid batteries. At this price you can change them out every year or so and it's no big deal. Or you could get a $400 AGM...
