Inverter/charger replacement

Post by seabreeze »

2005 45 voyager
I replaced my nonworking charles inverter in june 2018 with a xantrex 3000watt.
It shorted out and heavy black charring in august 2018, two months later.
My electrican says he found dried salt on top of inverter and recommends relocating out of starboard bulkhead which is the factory location.
My options are cover top and sides with a rain shield or relocate to where?
Any thoughts or experience out their?
Installing another one soon.

I have the new Xantrex with the xanbus controller, I'm quite happy with it. Mine is mounted in the factory location, which is the port bulkhead behind the port motor. Is your current location the stbd bulkhead in the engine room?

I have a Carver 33 SS. I built a cabinet above the fresh water tank that holds 4 6 volt batteries and an ignition protected inverter in the engine room.

My question if his inverter is behind the stbd motor on the bulkhead, is where did the sea water come from? And is that why the original one quit? Shouldn't have sea water there at all, unless a shaft seal is leaking or posibly a wet exhaust leak. I like your idea with the cabinet, but in his case, he shouldn't have needed one in that location. Maybe I'm mistaken on his current location tho?
