Crusader 350 not starting after winter
Hello i have 2 crusaders 350 in my Carver 28. After winter one of the engine dies as soon as i rev. Me and my father got it running after putting it in the water by pinching the fuel line (Desperate matters becaus both prop shaft packings was leaking like hell untill i put it in gear). After that it run nice and was responding on throttle. but when i started it again after moving it to the docking place it one engine dies as soon as i giv it throttle, runs on idle but not on throttle. What can cause this problem?, does these engines have some kind of choke that maby is stuck?. Does anyone here seen this problem before?.
What i can tell is that the engine gets to much fuel.
Sorry for my bad english.

Do you have carbs? If so, it sounds like you may have a float issue, if by pinching the fuel line it runs better usually means it's getting too much fuel.
If it is carbs then yes you have chokes and sometimes they do get stuck or the thermostat element that controls them is either stuck, broken or bad. It is easy to check by having the engines nice and warm, shutting them down and taking the flame arrestors off. The chokes should be wide open at that point. If not you have to figure out why they aren't.

Yes, you are carbed. When was the last time you cleaned your flame arrestors? Many people ignore them, but your engine will run rough if air flow to the carb is obstructed. They get dirty pretty quick. I clean mine once a month, and the engines love it. A film of oil collects on the outside of the arrestor and acts like a blanket. A little Dawn dish soap, mixed in a bucket of water. Take an old tooth brush and clean between the fins, they are sharp so down cut your fingers. Rinse, let them dry real good, and reinstall. The other thing it to change out your water separator fuel filters.

Cleaned the arrestor and the engine ran better. But om first long trip i notice that the engine hesitates on acceleration and wont go over 3200rpm. When I came in the guest harbour I got new spark plugs because the old looked bad. I took the carb apart and it looks like it sprays only fuel in one barrel. But the plugs on that side did not look like there is any lean condition. I will attach video

Sorry for late reply did not have notifications and had much at work so it was lovely to start vacation with one bad engine

Did you replace the fuel filters and do you have new fuel?
It sounds like you may have a bad accelerator pump or a clogged port from the pump, but start with the simple cheap stuff like filters.

No I have not replaced the fuel filter. Used all spring blasting the bottom and treat it with 5 coats of epoxy and after that with white bottom paint that turned to be grey. Took ages because I’m stupid enough to do everything by my self. Filled the tank full. But will check the fuel filter tomorrow. Would be nice if it was that simple. Never skip engine day even if you spend 200 hours in the hull will be my new motto

I believe the crusaders also have a :cleanable: screen filter that is round and flatish.

If you mean that one after fuel line before carb I looked at it when I took the carb to pieces and it was clean

I think you're referring to the Oberg filter. That was only on later model Crusaders from that I understand.
If you have Rochester carbs then you might have a small sintered bronze filter where the fuel inlet goes into the carb. You remove the fuel line then remove the "big nut" to get to it.
It does look like you have a problem with the accelerator pump, as it should spray in both venturies equally. That might cause your hesitation, but would not cause your 3200 RPM problem. The accel pump only functions when there's a CHANGE in throttle but once at any given setting it doesn't affect mixture (that's why you don't be able to detect a lean condition from just an accelerator pump issue). Check to make sure you're getting mechanical advance on your timing and check all the fuel filters so nothing is restricting the full flow of fuel to the engine. Might also check/replace the anti-siphon valve too.

Re: Crusader 350 not starting after winter
Yes i was referring to the Oberg filter
.. Somehow after changing sparkplugs. cleaning the flame resisstor and cleaning the carb that engine runs very nice now. Now i need to start with next project, finding out why the other engine overheats. Impeller looks nice but the belt that drives that pump seems to be little to loose and it is very hard to get access to tension it and my belt dealer seems to have hard time to find correct new belt. The thermostat opens nice when boiled. next need to be the "internal" water pump i assume.
