406 - travel lift or trailer haul out

406 - travel lift or trailer haul out

Some where, sometime ago, I thought someone said that the Carver 406 aft cabin could only be moved with a travel lift. Could not be moved safely on a trailer?

I was always taken out of the water with a travel lift then moved to a spot in the yard (while still in the slings) and then put on blocks.

Now I have a new yard and they want to take me out of the water with a travel lift, then the lift
puts the boat on a trailer and the trailer moves the boat into its spot in the yard - like 1000ft over a paved yard.

Now I am worried about it being moved on a trailer - is it safe to move the boat on a trailer?

I am no expert but I have seen some pretty fancy hydraulic trailers. They can conform to many different style boats.

Nearly all the powerboats in our marina are done that way. They use the travellift for the sailboats.

Don't think it would be any issue as long as they support the boat properly.

With the hydraulic trailers they have now, they could nearly set the boat on the ground. It's blocked up, but not very high. They used to use flatbed trailers and beams, and the boat waterline would be about 4-5' off the ground. Made it tough to wheel out the hullsides, as everything you did had to be at the top of a ladder!'

I have a 2006 Carver 44 CMY and it is spec'ed at 36,000 Lbs. I am taken out and returned to the water with a trailer every year. It takes a heavy duty hydraulic trailer and a gradual ramp.

Krates Marina in Keswick is one of the largest marinas in Ontario and they remove all of their boats by a travel lift and transfer them to a trailer to be taken to different areas in their yard.

Clearly your folks need to have the right trailer and know what they are doing. All is good with this process from my experience.

Personally I don't like hauling out a boat that size with the hydraulic trailer but some places do it all the time, no room for error when it's done that way though. I prefer the travel lift for that size but have no problem transferring to a trailer for blocking in close quarters.

You will be fine......I came out today...travel lift to trailer then over to its spot....the boat behind me was over 50 and 54000 lbs....same thing, travel lift to trailer.....now there are different size trailers but they will know....

I know they do lots of boats with trailers but there was just something about this model. It's very large but the big difference between all of them, the 406 has a deep V hull. So it's very tall
with the deep V.

Does anyone have a 406 that comes out on a trailer?

Mine isn't the same model as yours, but my yard told me never to have my 530 pulled by trailer. There's something to do with the engine stringers as a weak point. They pulled a 570 by trailer at the owner's request (didn't want to wait for travel lift availability) and basically had the motors drop out the bottom. Something to consider besides just weight and hull shape.

Most of the time mine gets moved on the hydraulic trailer, no issue whatsoever as long as the guy operating it has experience that is.

I agree completely.....have seen an over 50' boat in a travel lift with only two single slings and they were ok with it... :-O .....I think this all comes down to proper updated training, attention to detail and taking the appropriate amount of time for the job at hand. Sometimes the damage caused by mishandling/blocking is not apparent until years later.
