Gas Cap Maintenance

Post by Midnightsun »

Just a reminder as many never think about this. Your gas cap has an o-ring on it that seals the tank and keeps rain/wash water out of your tank. I highly suggest you remove it/them and replace with a new if you have never done so or if it looks to be in great shape then just apply silicone grease or o-ring lube to it. This will keep it looking and working great not to mention the gas cap comes on and goes off much better. A telltale sign it needs lube is slight squeaking when installing or removing.
Cheers, Hans

That is a good one,....just to add......while you are doing the ring, take the time to check that the grounding is still good....another overlooked maintenance check.
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

I replaced my o-rings a couple years ago. Pulled them out one time and saw a bunch of cracks. Only cost a couple bucks each and got them at the local hardware store. I don't use gasohol, but if I had to I would have upgraded to viton rings instead of the standard rubber ones.
