carver 2157 help

Post by italyraf »

Hello I.m Italian, excuse me for my terrible Emglish, I have a problem, I bought an carver 2157 with volvo penta 4.3 205 hp duo prop, the problem is little power, I must change the engine but I don't have idea the max power in the boat dts.
Originaly is engined by mercruiser 4.3 or 5.7 260 or volvo 4.3 for change engine without change the drive the best think is put in a volvo 5.7 but have 270 hp ...is correct?
Thank you and best regards

Hello in Italy from the United States! I work for a marina that was a Carver dealer until 2009...at the time, we were the oldest Carver dealer in the world. In the 2157 Montego, the max engine was a Volvo 570 DP, which was 275 HP. The boat is OK with the 4.3, but cruises very nicely with the 570. You will need to change the gear ratio of the outdrive when you change the engine horsepower. Parts for the change of ratio should be readily available at a Volvo Penta dealer. Let us know how the change goes!

Carvers (in the US) never had any sort of capacity plate on them so you'll have to check local regulations.
The 2157 is probably the biggest 21 foot boat out there! Rides well and is constructed very well....this is one of their downfalls...they are made like a Carver rather than a smaller boat. Thus, they are built better than they really needed to be, causing them to be more expensive (when new) than most of the boats in their class

The 523 was a later version of the 2157. Same boat with some trim differences. Calling is the 513 made the model number closer to it's actual size. The "5" in the 523 designated that is was a Montego, and the "23" designated it was a 23 footer...with the overall length being closer to 25 feet if it had the optional bow anchor pulpit.
