Lake Erie, New Islands to visit,Detroit River and north

Post by quickdecision »

Hello All
Rising waters continue to take their toll. Looking for new places to go to. We are are a bunch of boaters on the western end of Lake Erie, around Put n Bay, Kellys, Middle Bass, Pelee Islands. Over the last ten years we have been heading north, up the Detroit River. Sugar and Celeron Island have been a blast but they too have started to get smaller. We then moved up into Lake St. Clair, Strawberry, Grassy, Gull, Seaway are slowly vanishing also. Looking for recommendations for new places that are still above water.

This year (like last) you'll easily be able to get into Fisher Bay in LSC. In most years it's pretty shallow and only good for outdrives that you can trim up.

Are you looking for an island to tie up to or some water where you can wade around?

Our boats draw 5 ft. However we all inflatables that we use to get around. We prefer an island with a beach as we usually hang out for 4 to 6 hrs. Chairs, umbrellas, food, tables.

If you're thinking Canada, then Wallaceburg might be a place to explore, and you get to it off the St Clair River. There would be a fairly long no-wake going up the river and one or two drawbridges to navigate. I have not been there but I've heard it can be a nice weekend.

Another nice place to visit is Chatham Ontario. It's a ways up the Thames River and also a no wake trip but worth it IMO. I've been there a couple of times and do plan to go back. I have also been to Wallaceburg and can recommend stopping there too.

Just got back, ELBA MAR, Algonac, St.Clair, MacRays, The Old Club, ending with Middle Bass. Great time, lots of dinghy time.
