Motor yacht Salon Wooden counter post

Postby JMo » April 6th, 2020, 5:05 pm

Hello all - I’m about to have new countertops put in on my 1997 Carver 405 Aft Cabin . There is a vertical wooden post on the port hand side countertop which attaches to the ceiling . Has anyone removed this ? anything to be aware of ? I also noticed that I can feel a larger ( maybe 10 inch by 10 inch ) piece of wood on the other side of the ceiling vinyl which I’m worried about sagging the vinyl once the post is removed . I was also told in 1998 and newer Carver did not have it . Picture attached

Thanks

IMHO I think it is structural as there is no other purpose for it that is evident unless the boat was designed as a topless dancer bar. :-D Call Carver to be sure but my gut feeling is it is structural.

We looked at a 405, I believe it is to help support the bridge. Look in the cabinet underneath. If it is simply setting on the countertop, Then its not doing much. If it continues down to the floor structure or all the way down to the stringers, its definitely structural.

Hello welcome. The 405 and 406 in 1998 both have the posts some 406's not. I have a 405 and I can tell you the post does not go past the counter top its mounted on top. I've never thought about removing it but you indeed may find the salon ceiling material to be compromised where it is mounted and if removed you'll have to address .. If replacing countertops I know alot of the newer boats have no lip on the edge I'm not sure of your plan but I think the raised edge is pretty helpful so things won't roll off the counter as the boat moves around.

I agree. That 10" X 10" would tell me there is some sort of bracing element to that post. Maybe just something to reduce vibration possibility. Call Carver with your hull number in hand. They can tell you if it was for structural purpose, or not. 8-) er

They did not have it in the 1997 400 model, but similar salon height/width. 8-) er

Welcome to the forum.....I don't think removing that post is a good idea, my guess is it would not be there if it was not needed.

Is there any wiring run inside it ?

Edit......this is just my considered opinion, who knows ,maybe it is only decorative.... only wondered about the wiring.

The above is strictly my opinion.

again i have this boat. dont know if people read previous comments before they post, sometimes i dont think so and it makes me wonder. anyway the post is sitting on the counter. there is no underneath counter support to the floor or any other framing . also there is no wiring in it to the flybridge or anywhere else. that wiring path is way different to the bridge. also a carver 400 (although similiar on the exterior) is basically a 355/356 with cockpit and the boat is not designed the same inside as a 405/406.

Thanks for all the info. I will let you know the outcome when I pull it off in a few weeks for the new countertops
