Transducer replacement

Going to replace my vintage Apelco 360 fish finder which is burnt out and want to replace the cable and transducer, as well so I can have new tech . I’ve done a lot of work myself on boats but never replaced a thru-hull transducer while in the water . The picture shows my transducer . Can you pull and replace the transducer without taking on water ?

Depends on the type. I assume you're talking about replacing only the element, the middle black part that pulls out. Some have a valve that closes when you pull out the element. They're not entirely water proof when they close but they allow you time to insert a new element or a plug without taking on much water. Even without the valve, the amount of water that would come in is manageable. Having said that, you need to ensure that the replacement element you get is made for the housing you have otherwise you'll need to replace the entire assembly and that needs to be done out of the water.

Is it possible to find a new transducer that will fit in the original thru hull fitting? Has anyone done this? If not, how well will a new transducer work when mounted inside the hull transmitting thru the boat bottom?
