Holly Carb issue

Post by Dpoelstra »

Well I tried my first carb overhaul this weekend. The starboard endine was running very rich and was running uneven...not a consistent miss, but just uneven. The plugs were dry, black and sooty (rich condition). At idle I could see fuel at a steady and heavy drip in the carb...

I thought maybe needle and seat, but it turned out to be a stuck open power valve. It was dumping fuel all the time.

I bought a kit and tried my first overhaul, which scared me. I soaked everything overnight, cleaned, checked and double checked everything. Now she runs perfect. I just need to change the plugs.

How do I tell what kind of carb I have? My engine running noise sounds much like what was described in this first post. I'm not a mechanic, but have pulled off/cleaned my snowblower and lawnmower carbs without incident. Still, I'm a little intimidated by the increase in complexity. Should I be, or is there some easy youtube video ssomewhere I could follow?

Google holley carb, quadrajet. You will see the differenart what you have.
A holley has 4 venturi all the same size. A quadrajet has 2 small primaries and 2 huge secondaries.
And you YouTube does have videos.
Thanks

Both are really simple to rebuild.
The best thing to do is soak all the disassembled parts in hydraseal. Our buy two cans of gum out and spray every hole for at least a few seconds. At least as long as it takes to come out the other end of the hole.

Do NOT bend any linkages.

You will be fine.
Thanks
