new Carver owners with a minor pre trip issue

Post by dennis gasper »

Hello, my wife and I are the new owners of a 2003 466 we have just purchased in Sacramento Ca. We are currently waiting for the weather to be favorable to make the trip to our home port in San Diego.Yesterday I found the sump pump started running continuously. Today I changed the float switch and when I turned the breaker on it did the same thing, just runs until I trip the breaker. Looks like I will have some time before the weather changes enough to make the trip so I would like to resolve this before hand. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Thanks Dennis

The manual switch at the helm on? Wired wrong? Picture would help, Bilge pump or shower sump pump?

Thanks for the reply, it’s the grey water sump access just next to the galley floor. There is no switch just the breaker under the step at the aft bulkhead.

I assume you are talking about a typical shower sump box like this. https://www.westmarine.com/buy/rule-ind ... 31_001_508 That being the case, either the new float switch you installed is defective or you wired it up incorrectly. The only control for this type of unit is the breaker or the float switch.

Try disconnecting the float switch wires, at this point it should stop running. Connect the 2 wires together and it should start up. If this test works then the float is defective.

Hi,
When I disconnect the float switch wires the pump continues to run. The only way to shut it off is at the breaker. I also connected a new Rule 3700 just because And same thing. My only option I guess is to change out all wire connections starting with the ground even though they look solid.

Do you have the manual sump fore and aft switches on the safety breaker panel ??
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

Someone wired the pump incorrectly or there is a manual switch at the helm that is in the on position as opposed to automatic.

3 bilge switches at the helm are off. I believe they would be seperate From the grey water sump anyway? No manual switch on the breaker panel that I can see only the breaker on the panel under the step. I feel like I’m missing something here because all was working fine in the first week I took ownership so I have to believe it’s wired correctly. The connections look original and not like someone had previously changed the pump or float switch.
