Do port and starboard engines always sound the same?

Post by RWS »

1987 3607 aft cabin, both engines are the same make and have about the same hours on them but my port engine has a deeper sound than my starboard engine, could this be due to my bridge helm is on the starboard side and is simply a percussion effect, boat docked to port is raised on a lift well out of the water. boat docked on starboard side is in the water
would that have an effect, Any other thought to explain would be help full and appreciated

Thank you,
RWS

Ya if you’re trying to compare from outside, you have to eliminate surrounding influences by getting out on the water. That will give you a truer sense of whether there is a difference or not, and standing in the middle of the aft deck or swim platform is better than on one side of the bridge. If I recall the 3607 exhaust ports are very close to the water or partially submerged. If one side has a slight list that puts the exhaust port in or lower into the water, that will change the sound too.

Several things can affect the end result such as engine tuning, rpm differences, condition of the mufflers, a previous muffler change, exhaust routing, water flow, etc.

Open the engine hatches to first determine if the engines sound the same right at the source.

Also compare the water flow of both engines. If you don't have as much water flowing you will get a deeper throaty sound.
