Hydraulic steering

Post by colorpro fiberglass »

Woops! Im new to the site, accidently originally posted this on introduce-yourself! Lol
I just bought a 1987 3207 that has no owners manual LOL! The steering is not working but the flybridge was moved to ship it to me. Everything is hooked up but I cant even find the fluid reservoir. Can someone help me steer my new baby? :) Thanks in advance, love this site, love my new boat!!! :captain:

Welcome!
I have to guess this steering system is a hynautic system.
The reservoir is probably back by the rudders.
You will need to reattach all the hoses.
You will then fill the reservoir and probably an inch above the full line.
Then charge the reservoir with 25 psi of air. There should be a pressure gage on the reservoir.
Then go to the lower station and barely loosen the middle hose until only oil comes out.
Then same with upper station.
Now the fun begins.
If you go to the teleflex site you can look up the hynautic manual. It will tell you you start turning the wheel in one direction for something like 75 revolutions one way. Then after you are done with that 75 the other way.
There
The helm stations are the pumps. If is a completely manual system.
You may have to turn the wheel while somebody cracks open the fitting on the correct side of the cylinder, while the cylinder is pulled all the way to the correct side to get the air out of the cylinder.
Let us know how it goes.

Oh the oil is a hynautic hydraulic oil. Cheapest place to buy is ebay I've found.
Be careful with the ferrule fittings they are obsolete
Thanks

Thanks for the help, we got her going, everything you told me to do was spot-on! Maiden voyage with steering(LOL) was awesome. Funny thing is toilet was screwed up yesterday so I opened a small cabinet to look for hose access...low and behold..there was the Carver owners manual!! Lol

Not sure if this is still monitored, but I have an issue where the upper helm steering freely spins with no stops, but lower help works. Any ideas?

You are low on fluid. Or have air.
Find your reservoir. Does it have fluid. Does it have any air pressure?
If yes to both, start spinning that wheel. 50 to 75 in one direction until it catches, then the same the other way.
If no pressure or fluid, full it up, pump it up to about 30 psi, and find the leak.
Thanks
