battery / dc layout

Post by aloysius »

I have a carver 2000 406 aft cabin and am trying to get a wiring diagram for the batteries. I have 4 batteries that feed the boats systems. I have a battery charger that keeps these four batteries charged when I'm hooked into shore power.
I have a schematic from the owner's manual which show's all the DC circuits but nothing on the batteries.
Any help would be highly appreciated because I need to remove some of the batteries while still living on the boat and in the water.

Is that the stock configuration? Perhaps a call to Carver could help.

If everything is working properly now, just mark battery cables, take a picture, then remove the batteries. May I suggest you not run a new battery against an older battery. Why are you removing the batteries?

on my 405 oem was 3 batteries. 1 for each engine selectable with battery switch under bottom step and 1 for genset. sounds like somebody just added one in parrallel for house bank visually that would be an indicator of which is most likely the house bank. theres not really a schematic as you have found. what are you trying to do? have you got a volt meter?

Ok, you say you have 4 batteries to feed the boat's systems. Any chance those 4 are for the house and you have a separate, 5th battery for your genset?
If that is the case, any chance those 4 are 6 volt batteries wired in series/parallel?
We just need more info.

After reading the responces, I believe that two batteries are for the house, two are for the engine starting, and of course one lone one to start the generator. I need to remove some of the batteries because I need to get to the bilge pump mounted underneath the generator. I've tried reaching the bilge by laying down atop the batteries, but just have enough reach to touch one of the wires. I need a little closer to replace the pump and the float switch.

If the pump is that hard to get to then I would really consider making a bracket for the pump and switch so that you could get to the bracket mounting bolts and pull the whole thing when necessary.

I have the 98 405 aft cabin .
Have five series 31.
I have the same questions as to which ones of the 4 first ones coming from aft forward power what. I have replaced over time all of them. I always was under the thought that the first 2 were for each engine and the 3rd and 4th were House and bow thruster. 5th was Gen alone.
My VOLTMETER up top showed low voltage and slow engine turnover so checked all batteries and found #1 and #3 dry so replaced the two of them. Voltage is fine now BUT after further inspection it appears it is the #1 and #3 that supply the engines!!!? Wish the OWNERS MANUAL gave more info.

I have a 1996 355. I had battery issues and a previous owner that did crazy stuff. I wanted to remove his mess and put it back to stock. I called Carver when they were still a thing and got the battery schematics. On the 355 they wired two 12 v batteries in parallel for bank 1 and same for bank 2. These are wired to the 1/2/all/off switch. Then there is one battery connected on an on off switch connected to the generator.
