Replacing fuel filters on Santego 3467, Crusaders

Barry - bring a couple of clear glass jars when you remove filters. Empty the filters into the jar and you will see real easily if there is any water in your gas. There should not be much, if any, gas draining out of the fuel line. When you restart, after the replacement, it may take some throttle pumping to refill the new filters. You have to pump the throttle while the engine is turning over to get gas flowing. The first time I did this, it took several tries to get the engine running. er

They can fail two ways; they can fail closed or partially closed leading to poor engine performance, and they can fail open which would allow fuel to siphon in the presence of a leak or replacing the fuel filter, etc.

I don't think this applies in Barry's case but you don't want to do that in an application where an electric fuel pump is used. Running the pump dry for any amount of time will shorten it's life pretty quick. You should always fill the filter first in an electric pump application. The fuel is the only thing that lubricates the pump while it's running.

I may be incorrect, but I don't think the Carver put electric fuel pumps in prior to 96. Thought fuel systems were vacuum style. Please correct me if I am wrong. er

Ya that's why I said I didn't think it applied in Barry's case. Putting it out there for general knowledge. Are your XLs mechanical or electric on the '95?

I replaced all 4 of the fuel filters yesterday without a problem. No significant fuel leakage. I guess the anti-siphon valves are OK.

The starboard engine is a 454 Gen 5. The original engine was replaced within about a year of purchase for some reason. This one has a Sierra filter mounted low on the side of the engine. Date written on the old filter was June, 2017. This model has an electric fuel pump.

The port engine is the original 454 Mark 4. A Sierra filter is mounted high at the front of the engine. It was also marked June, 2017. There is a second filter in the fuel line mounted high, Fram FCS1136M. Not sure when it was last changed. I also changed the rubber gasket. This engine has a mechanical fuel pump.

The generator has a Racor 110. I replaced the filter element and 2 rubber gaskets. This one looked like it had not been changed in a very long time, judging by the build up on the gaskets. It is mounted high on the transom.

Fortunately there was no water anywhere in the system and the filter elements looked pretty clean.

I'll try to replace them again sooner then the 3 1/2 years since the last change.

Viper & others. '95 XL's have mechanical fuel pumps. I replace my fuel filters every year, regardless of low hours or not. Cheap maintenance, and you never know when you pull up to a marina that is pumping from the bottom of their tanks. er

Barry, what generator make and model do you have? It may have a secondary filter on the unit itself. Some Kohlers for example have an inline filter that you wouldn't know is a filter unless you're familiar with it.

May look like it's a large fitting just before the fuel pump. If it's painted white, it's likely never been replaced. Depending on your model, it may be just behind a small removable metal plate, bottom right corner by the pump.
