It's usually a pretty good indication that everything's okay but that gets increasingly harder to do as the build increases in size. There comes a point where you can't tell whether it's hard to turn because of the size of the gear or whether there's an alignment issue. You also have to keep in mind that the true picture is with the hull in the water.
