Floscan/Twinscan

I have a twinscan fo my twin 454 carved engine. It is about 5 years old. One side works great, the other side does not root GPH. The gauges does its self check so I know it works. Has anyone encountered a stuck/sticky sensor?

I have the same problem. Rapped the sensor, checked connections and now have bought a new sensor. Once I install it I will let you know the outcome. I have gotten tired of taking the fuel burn x 2!

If its been on the boat for about 10 years or more, the sensors were prone to failure with ethanol fuel. They have newer sensors that will work with the ethanol.

Tom, where did you get yours? Any idea of part number?

Tony, I didn't get the new ones. Mine have not yet failed, knock on wood. 5 years ago they where available through flowscan on their website. I think they have closed up.

I got a response from the yesterday. They are releasing a new display in June. They do have a limited amount of sensors available, I am hoping to get one. A friend said to squirt some Brakleen in it as it is just gummed up? Is it a mechanical type sensor?

These devices are pretty simple. Basically just an impeller that spins and rpm is quantified to give whatever information the programers want show up on your gauge. Spinning impellers over time will eventually wear out whether it be bearing or bushing which will cause them to read erratically or not at all.

I use these for flow calculation of hydraulic fluids. They work very well, wont be applicable to what we need on boats but it will give you an idea of how these devices function. Just scroll down and look at the pictures where you will see the impeller. These have 2 displays on the face, one is cumulative amount of fluid that has passed through and the other is litres/minute that is passing through. Notice these only cost $27. These units actually replaced some $600+ $ units that were rather inaccurate and unreliable.

Pretty much like the Floscan, except we have 3 wires heading up to the instrument gauge. I am going to take the hose off and see if with a bit of mechanical spinning it is free or gummed up.

If you know someone with an ultrasonic cleaner, that should remove the gum/varnish. I have one and it really works well on old carbs however sometimes even that cannot get it all.

I made it into the bilge this afternoon, tight fit, but ZI did it. (3 years ago at 300LBS I never would have made it, but this svelte 185LB 63 year old hunk was able to!) I removed the sensor, and blew into it, and nothing. I then took a piece of stiff steel wire, and pushed it into the hole. Then when I blew through it, I could hear the vane spin! So I followed up with a tad of Brakeklene and reassembled. VOILA! She is registering again! Actually all the projects I did today turned to gold in my hands! Installed a sender and gauge for the eater tank, another bilge pump in the aft cabin, near the shower sump (I have it pumping into the sump as I was not able to add another through hull right now, changed out the zinc on the genset, and pre sprayed the carpets for shampoo day tomorrow. Then we can move in next weekend. The bride was there pointing her finger as to what I needed to do. Made me smile!,
