Proper oil for 350 crusader engines

Post by vennjav@yahoo.com »

I recently was reading comments as to Carver owners using 15-40 Shell Rotella engine oil. Several said they liked it. So I bought the oil and put it in one of my gasoline engines. Now I see it says diesel on the container. Duh! So I wonder if the forum I read was all from diesel owners! Help!

It's OK. Yes, it's marked diesel but it's OK in the older engines on our boats. Lots of folks use Rotella or 15w-50 Mobil1. Both are good for the non-roller tappets we have.

Been using rotella for years.
At one point. Oil companies were forced to reduce zddp to a very low level. This was a problem for engines with solid lifter engines. Rotella had a high amount. Many of us old school racers continue to use it.
Zddp is good for your engines.
Thanks

To clarify, that ZDDP is important for any flat tappet lifter, both solid and hydraulic. Most current engines have roller lifters (which can be solid or hydraulic too) these days so they don't need things like ZDDP. Since ZDDP is also bad news for things like catalytic converters and O2 sensors the newer blends of most oils reduces the content of ZDDP. While it's been reduced somewhat in the Rotella 15-40 and Mobil1 15-50, those still have much higher levels than most of the other blends, especially the lower viscosity versions that are intended for newer car engines.

I agree, all flat tappet lifters.
I also have a stash of gm EOS which is a break in lube very high in zddp. A can goes on each engine of Plain Vanilla. I put a half can in each of my crusaders in the Carver.at oil change.
Thanks
