If you can get a picture of that thing, it might be easier to identify it. I'm wondering if it's a a screen and it was erroneously installed on the output side instead of the input side.

If the pump keeps cycling on and off then you either have a leak after the pump or the pump valves have something wrong. It could be something as simple as some small debris stuck in there. Most times you can disassemble the pump head and clean everything and put it together and it will be fine. However, since you're also losing water, it's probably a leak this time.

Probably an accumulator tank.

If outfitted, check icemaker. Mine had an old water supply line leaking that caused the pump to run every few minutes and since water was leaking on deck, it was hard to locate.

Ya was thinking an accumulator tank too but that's a lot to try and fit into that little space by the pump. I usually associate "Water Puppy" with a model of utility pump but they may have had other accessories too. The strainer should be in that space plumbed into the line between the tank and the pump. A picture of the "Water Puppy" would help. Is there one or two hoses going to it? An accumulator tank will only have one line hooked up.

BYW, it's way easier to work in that space if you remove the bottom step. They are fastened to aluminum angle brackets on both sides. Look under the step and you'll see the brackets and two screws on each side.

Cylindrical shape, but actually a pump.

That's a utility pump meant for moving/transferring liquids. It's not ideal for use as a pressurized fresh water pump even if you were to add a pressure switch. It incorporates a flexible impeller which cannot be allowed to run dry. Flexible impeller type pump performance drops off quickly as system pressure increases so they are not meant for the type of pressures required for pressurized water systems. That's why bellows or diaphragm types are the design of choice as they can run dry and can easily achieve the pressures needed.

Late to this discussion but I’m having a water system problem (specifics are yet to be determined) on my 1985 2807. Is there a water system diagram or other resources people might recommend?

Welcome aboard Lizzie. You've posed this question on a couple of other people's threads already. You'll have better luck if you start your own thread and pose the question there. Click on the "AC/Heat, Plumbing & Sanitation" section, then click on the blue "New Topic" button on the left.

Ray, did you ever get this resolved?

I finally ended up moving my pump into the engine on the other side of the stairs. Way easier to access and work on. I installed a different pump with higher volume and pressure, works awesome, very happy. The strainer is connected directly on the pump's quick connect port so super easy to remove and service. No more squeezing into a tiny opening in the floor. One more thing off the bucket list!
