3967 Santego AC

I need to replace my original AC unit in my 89 3967 Santego. the unit is under the entrance stairs. I can not find a way to remove the stairs. Anyone seen this done ?

I assume your stairs are carpeted like mine. Under the carpet there are fours screws, one in each corner of the top step.
