Warning beeps

Post by MarkE »

New to me 1987 27 ft Santego
The 4.3 MPI motors seem to run just fine, yet I'm getting beeps after they come up to temp. that being 175 deg. each.
fluids are toped off.
I guess I'm looking for the definitions for the beeps.
I would be grateful for any guidance.

MarkE, please give us a little more detailed information. Do you have a raw water cooling or a closed cooling system? That’s sounds a little high for a raw water system. What make are the engines, mercrusiers? With alpha 1 outdrives?

Coolant temperature would be my guess, but I agree more info would be helpful. I recently had my 325 with Crusader 350 xl engines start beeping on me (6 beeps in a row). Despite water temperature readings showing up normal, I realized that when I replaced the risers, one of them wasn't quite tightened enough, and most of the coolant ended up in the bilge rather than in the engine. Ratcheted it down, refilled the coolant, and the next trip, no beeping.

I’m not sure on the out drives. Probably gen 1
It does have a raw water heat exchanger.
With all kinds of business going on top of it. Little air pump
The bottom was clean when I put her in.
Motors are 2004 mercrusier and appear to be complete

So you have a closed cooling system. It looks like you boat has been repowered. I could be wrong, but I don’t think MPI was around back in 87 and the original engines would have been carbureted. When the alarm has came
On, did you have any other items on, such as depth sounder, chart plotter, etc., or just the engines. I know on my Santego, I have alarms for AIS, chart plotter, gas fume detector, depth and water temp sounder , transmission, key on/engine not running, etc. my point are you sure the alarm is from your engines?

Ya that temp seems high so she may be overheating. I suspect your t-stats are 160 deg. But I agree, you need to confirm that it's an engine alarm and not something else.

Is this vessel new to you? Do you guys winterize where you are? I believe the pump you're talking about (is it a blue hand pump) is used to drain the raw water side of the cooling system. For the system to work properly when put back into service, you need to ensure the system isn't still pressurized with air by pulling the relief valve on top by the air lines.

Do you have gear lube bottles mounted in the engine bay? I don't see them on the engines. If your application does have lube monitors (bottles), ensure they're topped up as low fluid will set off an alarm.

When was the last time the impellers in the drives were replaced?

sorry for the late response had to go make some money lol.
So yes Repowered in 2004.
I did not have the depth sounder hooked up.
Impellers were replaced two months ago.
@Viper
that's really what I'm trying to do is narrow down what the alarm is.
A friend of mine told me about a fellow in California will make dongles to hook up to these engines. may have to go that route.

2004 engines? Do they support SmartCraft? (I thought all mercs past 2001 did, but that might not apply to all). If so, you should check out something like a Vesselview Mobile box, because then you could see the specs on both engines while you were running and viewed on your phone or a tablet.
