I'm still curious what type of metal the corroded bolt was made of, and if it was different than the strut. If it was, then you could have had galvanic corrosion going on there too.

The bolt looked to be a generic steel/iron material. It was definatly rusted through. The strut appears to be brass? We're still in the water for another week or so....
