Location of fuel line shutoff valves

Post by curran_286@msn.com »

Hi everyone,
I just purchased a 1986 Carver aft cabin, and was wondering if there is a shutoff valve for each gas tank. During my last fill-up, I noticed that one tank was full, and the other was empty. It seemed odd that the tanks didn't consume fuel evenly, Is it supposed to pull fuel from one tank for both engines. Please advise.

Thanks,

John

Take a look under the seat cushion of your dinette. Otherwise, just check your owner's manual. should disclose in there. 8-) er

I used to have a 1988, 3807 aft. Fuel switches were in the aft cabin closet. Not sure which model boat you have, if not there, open every door and hatch until you find them…they are there.

Welcome aboard John. Ya Carver was putting the valves in the aft cabin forward closets for a while. If the valves are set right, each engine should be drawing fuel from it's respective tank. If the generator is run often, it will run that tank down faster (maybe port tank).

If one tank was empty and the other full, that would be a red flag for me. Hopefully this isn't the case but if there's a leaking tank, that would be a good reason not to fill it. Did you get a survey, and did you have the tanks pressurized to test for leaks? If you've filled the tank, I'd keep an eye on it in case it is leaking. Have you confirmed it was empty and not an incorrect reading at the gauge?

Just a thought…
Using the switches, you can pull from one tank or the other to feed both engines. Just wondering if there is a problem with the full tank, such as bad gas, trash in the tank or even a lot of water and the seller turned off that tank to hide the problem. A surveyor would have questioned the switches set to pull from one tank.

FYI, gensets usually pull from the port tank

Also, if you had a leaking tank, the smell most likely would be very noticeable. It’s hard to hide a leaking tank from your nose.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my question. I will look in all the aft cabin closets. I did find the battery switch in one of the aft cabin closets. Hopefully I will find the fuel switch. Lots to learn about this boat.

We have a 1985 3607 and the fuel levers are under the last step as you come down into the salon. Not sure if that was stock or if a previous owner moved them.

On the 3607 that was the stock location. The battery selector switch would be there too if the original owner chose the dual battery option. BTW, the next step up also has some space in it. If you ever re-carpet the steps, take some time and put a hinge in that next step up so you can use it also. I was going to move my battery switch(es) up there and add a second one for more flexibility.
