Future owner of Carver 444

Post by Tim Mayer »

Hello all,

Just starting to get used to the idea of buying a real boat (everything else has been<20 ft). Planning on getting a 444 after my daughter graduates high school in two years. Will be selling the house and using the proceeds to buy it. We will be doing the great loop and possibly the carribean if I can talk the admiral into it. So far she has agreed to the loop, but is afraid of pirates to go further.

Welcome, selling the house will be a very very big step. Have you spent any length of time on a larger boat in the range of a 444? Not saying you are doing anything wrong or that I'm making any judgment but that big boat can get really small after a while. If your going to move out if your house anyway and look for something else it might be a easier to live on a boat full time,, as a in between thing to do. However it may just be the thing for you and your wife forever, Traveling and exploring would be great and is on my and my wife's plans too ie the loop etc. I have boated all my life and after staying on our boat a couple months or so at a time I find I'm itching to get back to my garage and my other hobbies for a bit. I used to think of selling the house too but I've found for us we will always need a home base. Just take a long look at your plan. I hope whichever way you choose you have the best of luck.

Tried to reply yesterday but phone died just before sending. I truly appreciate your help and understand what you are saying. I already have a paid for house I will be returning to eventually. The house I am selling is for work purposes. Just waiting for my daughter to graduate so she doesn't have to change schools. The house sell will provide the funds to buy the boat, pay off all debts, and fund the loop trip including down into the carribean.

You may have already found it but here's a link for a great amount of knowledge for the trip, I'll join this eventually. The loop is definitely on my radar too...https://greatloop.org/ best of luck with your boat search, you might even find another boat option when you get serious on your purchase sometimes the right boat comes along that wasn't even in your sights.
