Canvas: 1998 Carver 355 AFT Cabin

Post by JSchwartz49 »

We are rehabbing a 1998 Carver 355. Does anyone have used (take off) full canvas enclosure that I could buy? I'm looking for used vs. new. Thanks.

Welcome aboard, and good luck with your search. Hopefully someone's kept their old one and willing to part with it.

Not sure how Carver made their canvas however most boat manufacturers custom install the snaps on each boat they make. I once ordered a used canvas for another brand of boat only to find out none of the snaps came even close to fitting my boat although it was the same model and year. Can you imagine how difficult it would be during fabrication to have everything line up to perfection form snap distance to roof to windshield so that canvas from one boat to another would fit? I highly doubt used canvas on a Carver will fit your boat properly but maybe I am wrong. Just giving you a heads up on some wasted $ on a past experience.
Cheers, Hans

Hans is correct. Back when Carver had their own canvas shop, the snaps were drilled into place in the finishing area. Then the canvas was stretched over and snaps were punched into the canvas aligned with the actual snap location. If you find a used top, ( very unlikely ), you will need to install additional snaps to line up. There is a company called Carver Marine that makes tops but is not related to Carver boat. You are most likely going to need to contact a canvas contractor in your area. They will make the pattern, and then install snaps as a last install step. OR, you can take delivery of the tops and install snaps yourself. Not hard to do as long as you get a little education first. Good luck! 8-) er

Finding used canvas will be difficult. Finding used canvas in good condition, very difficult. Finding used canvas in good condition with snaps lining up, pretty much impossible.
Hate to say it, but if you want canvas for your boat, you’re going to have to bite the bullet and have it custom made.
