Digital Speed Log Impeller Replacement

Post by wetfolly »

I own a 1987 Carver Riviera that has an SL-2 Digital Speed Log (Standard Communications). The
impeller has broken. The boat stays in the water year-round. Is it possible to replacement the impeller
from the top-side while the boat remains in the the water? I am unlikely to find the replacement part because of the age of the unit so, any suggestions on where to find the part?

You wont be able to find a replacement. Why do you want to go through the hassle of trying to fix it? I don't know the set up but I would doubt that you could service it while still in the water. That type of speed sensor has become basically obsolete now.

I suppose for the same reason I go through the hassle of owning a 1987 boat in the first place.

I would just remove the display and leave the impeller component. All chart plotters and GPS units today give your speed.

Nothing wrong with an older boat, at least you are on the water.

If you see a pin going through the transducer's shell, the it is replaceable while in the water.
I am sure you can find a replacement ducer on ebay.

Have the new used ducer ready, pull the pic, expect an onslaught of water, push the other one in, reset the pin.
Thanks

I took my auto gps on the boat. It actually plotted my speed and location fairly well but when
I was approaching town I asked to GO HOME. It told me to turn left on second street. I like to
keep old things working including myself.

You'd be surprised at some of the parts you could still find if you look hard enough and have the patience to keep looking. eBay is great for older stuff, just keep looking and be ready to act when you see what you want.

Do you have a picture of the unit you're talking about?

One thing I have done from the start of boating: every winter when the boat comes out, I cycle all the seacocks, pull the replaceable ducers and install new orings. When I had my Riviera in California, I would regularly cycle the seacocks. I waited until re-doing the bottom to pull the ducers.

Everybody should cycle your seacocks often; you never know when you will need them, and when you do, you don;t want them stuck.
Thanks
