Replacement refrigerator

Post by Gypsy Soul »

We have a marvel refrigerator in our 2001 Carver 466 Motor Yacht which is near the end of its functional life. I was wondering if anyone replaced their refrigerator and what brand and kind of refrigerator they have chosen. A direct Marvel replacement retails at around $1600. It seems a less expensive alternative might be available.

What makes you think it's near the end of its functional life?

Is there something wrong with it or are you speculating based solely on its age?

Mine is the original from 1989 and works fine. The ONLY reason I would consider replacing while it still works is that I spend 2-4 day weekends on the hook so power management is always top of mind and the new units are more efficient. Other than that, I'll hang on to the original until it caughs up its last ice cube! I also find the electronics on newer fridges and air conditioners fail much too easily. All it takes is poor line voltage for one reason or another and failure is imminent.

Replacement refrigerator

My 81 3007 has I think the original refrigerator in it. I too think it is on its last legs. Last season I put a thermometer inside the unit. It only cools to 43* in the refrigerator section and 22* in the freezer section. I am hoping to get at least this upcoming season out of the unit before I look into replacement. I would like for the refrigerator section to get down to at least 37* and the freezer section to 10*. My last boat a 99 Bayliner 3055 had an excellent refrigerator. It has settings from 0 to 5 and I only had to set it to 3 midway and it kept food cold. Anything below 3 and stuff in the refrigerator section would start to freeze.

The Detroit Boat Show is next month so I will start looking at replacement units then.
