350 Mariner - some questions/comments

It is my understanding that discharge systems for bilge pumps need to be unrestricted.
I'd be very careful installing one of those clamshells.

Very interesting! I have a 99 Mariner and the discharge for mine is at the bow where yours is. Not sure why they have two different locations for it on what is essentially the same boat.

We were out on Sunday but very calm water so not the best test environment. Our club has a cruise this weekend to another club. Won't be covering a huge distance but should be pretty choppy out there. Might be a better opportunity to test it out. Makes perfect sense to me though that this might be the culprit.

Hello! I have a 2000 350 Mariner. I think that is identical to the 1999 model right?

So I thought I would tag along in this thread and ask a question of my own:
I noticed that when going at 15 knots or so, my fuel gauge reads almost a quarter tank lower than what it reads when at idle speeds. Is this due to tilt of the tanks? Should I be going by what the gauge reads at low speeds? It can be a bit disconcerting when looking down at your fuel gauge and seeing the needle pointing at E.

Mariner Forward Bilge water follow-up;

Did two more runs with duct tape covering the forward bilge pump discharge thru-hull. The forward bilge area stays completely dry.

We just purchased a 1998 Carver 350 Mariner and will splash it in late April. One of the first things I noticed was the carpet in the galley area ... a magnet for spills and stains. Also, on the 98 there are three access portals while later versions had one larger (something similar to a ski locker cover we had on smaller bowriders) that cover the three portals. I'd like to replace the portals and the carpet.

Did you figure out how and with what to replace the carpet. Been thinking about removing the carpet and laying down simulated wood laminated vinyl covering but not sure how it would hold up on marine environments. Thoughts?

Also, what propulsion system do you have? Ours is equipped with Merc 350 MAG EFI ... 450 hours.

I have a 1981 Carver 3007 Aft Cabin that I purchased last August. In the galley area it has some sort of wood looking stuff on the floor area. I am not sure when it was installed but it seems to be holding up OK at this time.

Im looking at a 1998 carver mariner with merc 7.4 MPIs. Test ran yesterday and port had 3300 rpms and the starboard had 3500 Wot maxed out at 18.2knot. Anyone know what is normal?

You do not specify which model/length you are referring to, but that seems slow for that powertrain for the typical 32-36 foot range Mariner. She should run upper 20s to near 30 at around 4500 RPM.

I would take a look at the hose going to the thru hull and check that it has a vented loop well above the waterline. Sometimes it's just a cable tie holding the loop there and it may have broken off...

Mine is covered with growth right now and slows the top speed dramatically and makes getting on plain difficult as well. When I first splashed mine with a clean bottom, my top speed was around 28 mph with twin 7.4l's
