2006 mariner 36

Post by Maikgruft »

Hi Guys , I bought last December a 2006 Carver mariner 36 .
The boat has the 5.7 volvo penta engines .
The survey found no issues with the boat .
The engines both have 300 hours on them .
As it was stored in a heated place 2 hours away from location , I brought over the water to my home .
My problem is that both engines only make 3200 rpm and then stull out .
When I reading correctly the engines should make 5500 rpm .
As I ask a mechanic ,he said it could be the wrong probs .
But it still shut off on me , even in neutral at 3200 .
If it would be the gas pumps, then either off the engines would shut off at diffrent idel.
Any one out here no what my problem is ,or if it is from carver restricted in the beginning.
Thanks for any input

Welcome to the forum...... There can be a number of reasons for this from fuel to dirty bottom to wrong props, to tune up.... but IMO your best course of action is to get a marine mechanic who can connect to the engine electronic control boxes to see if there are any trouble codes in memory and check the systems for correct function, I am basing this on your 3200 rpm number.....try not to rev the engines at the dock excessively with no load.

Your engines are electronic/computer controlled and with the boat being new to you, maybe not a bad course of action.....good luck with your new boat.
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

Fuel issues are the most common cause of power problems on boats. How fresh is the fuel in the tanks?

When were the fuel filters replaced... and do you know if ALL the fuel filters were replaced? Some boats/engines have multiple sets of filters in line, so any one being clogged up will limit engine performance.

I would guess as other suggested bad fuel. Get the old fuel pumped out of the tanks, have all fuel filters replaced and fill up with new gas.
When running in gear, those engines should make at least 4500 rpm. I wouldn't push them to 5500 for more than a minute, just to see if they can get there.

Ok, you said the survey found no issues with the boat. All surveys I have ever done included sea trial…was the low RPM’s not mentioned in the sea trial? I would think that issue is a big red flag.

My 2003 Mariner is having the same issue. I will be installing new rotors, caps and fuel filters next week or so. I also have plugs for both engines, GXII-E's

Update on the rpm issue:
New rotors, caps and plug wires same issue so after a lot of research i replaced the fuel injectors with a set of rebuilt ones, 4200 rpm and she runs like new. I'm sending the old injectors out to have them cleaned and will be changing out the port injectors.
