Power Steering Leak - can't find the source

Post by justinjamesdean »

I have a 7.4 mercruiser in my Carver 280. It's been leaking power steering fluid (A LOT) and I can't seem to find where it's coming from. Saw some videos on that make me think it might be the fluid heat exchanger/cooler but wondering if anyone had a recommendation on where to look? That cooler unit is pretty buried under the engine...

Thank you!

If any oil is leaking through a heat exchanger, one of the ways to determine this is to idle at one spot (at the dock) and run the engine. if it's a steering issue swing the wheel back and forth a few times. Then look at the water in the exhaust to see if you see any sheen. If you do you can soak it up with a paper towel to help see the color to determine what you're dealing with.

Are you saying that you see power steering fluid in the bilge or no? If it's in the bilge, then it's likely from your steering actuator/cylinder, or fitting, hose, etc.
