Sewing canvas

Post by tonyiiiafl »

Boat is away, canvas is polished and placed away. I still have 3 panels that need new clear Isenglass. I have had the canvas guy install O;Sea .040. So far love it.

The 2 panels that need it that I think I can do, are pretty straight forward and canvas is in super shape. Looks like ripping the stitching out, cutting new glass to the size of old (use old as a pattern) and stitching back in. Has engine done this? What did you use as a sewing machine? I see some on EBAY that look capable. Thread? any issues doing it as you see it?

Thanks for the input!

Tony

If you haven't already check out Sailrite.....they have many videos and how toos....you may see something to help. I know there are folk here that have done their own and hopefully they can provide some advice.
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

First stitch the new vinyl in. THEN cut out the old. The panel will keep its shape
Thanks

The big issue like everything else is the right tools. We’ve done this with minimal skill, but it takes a very beefy machine. We bought a straight stitch machine from Sailrite. It’s a beast. A regular machine just doesn’t have the power to stitch canvas and heavy materials. The Sailrite machine goes through the eisenglass like a dream. You wouldn’t have to do too much yourself to pay for the machine. Make sure you get UV resistant thread.

We bought a Juki DNU1541S. Servo motor. Stand. Lights. For what the Sailright package costs, I'd suggest looking at the Juki. We bought it in Chicago on Milwaukee Avenue. Forgot the name of the place.
Juki is still made in Japan. I am guessing the sailright is Chinese, but I do not know that.
Thanks

Had a friend who did all his canvas and he was stuggling to justify the price for a Sailrite, but then found a REX machine that was identical to the Sailrite and he got that. He was very satisfied with it and did all his canvas and enclosures.

this is the model, but you can probably find it cheaper on other sites that this one:

I have a sailrite machine I've had it for many years. I really like it and have sewn up quite a few things. You'll probably find other projects too

The place I bought our Juki is sewingmachinesplus.com.
Before you buy anything else, research the juki. For about the same money you get a true industrial machine.
Thanks

We purchased an Omega Walking-Foot machine. It looks like the Sailrite machine. walking-foot.com. If you are on Facebook, there is a group called Sewing on Boats (SOB). Seems like more sailboats but some powerboats. Lots of advice and ideas.
