Hull number deciphering, what info does this give?

Got the following message from Jim through a PM, I seem to remember that the hull number is built up of various segments that refer to certain location/year and perhaps model. The latter is what Jim is looking for as apparently there's a lot missing from the boat he obtained.

The following may or may not help as the number above does not appear to be a Carver HIN.... all boats since 72 have a 12 character HIN on the hull with the first three characters denoting the manufacturer.....CDR/CVR I believe is designated for Carver. Found the following on Boat Safe.

Individuals building boats for their own use and not for the purposes of sale are what are referred to as “backyard boat builders.” They must obtain a 12 character Hull ID Number from their State boating agency. The Manufacturer Identification Code at the beginning of the HIN for a “home built” boat is an abbreviation for the State followed by a “Z” which indicates that it is a State identification.

Hard to say the actual reasons for that number being on the title.....if he could provide a picture it would perhaps be more obvious.

The hull number may have been missing for a while and a previous owner may have applied to the state for one (Ohio?). That may explain why it's not an OEM hull number.

It wouldn't hurt to look elsewhere in the boat for an OEM number. The stringers were a pretty common location. It may also be worth using a light in the typical locations where hull numbers are molded into the hull such as the starboard transom corner or starb aft corner of the hull side. That area of the hull may have been damaged in the past and a repair makes it seem like a number was never there. Shining a light at different angles may reveal remnants of a number if a repair was superficial. If the number was on a plaque affixed to the hull as they commonly are on Carvers and it was lost, you may be out of luck, that's why I'm not crazy about them. As long as you have the number recorded elsewhere though, you can have a replacement made. I've dealt with accidents that have destroyed molded numbers, in those cases I would have a plaque made as it's the easiest way to affix a number back on. The number is needed on the outside for several reasons, but they are prone to getting damaged, this is why a number inside the boat as well (stringers, electrical panel, etc.) is a good idea.

Assuming the original hull # was somehow removed, and a previous owner applied for a surviving number in Ohio and was able to retain numerical sequence, here is the translation. OHZ = Ohio state assigned in lieu of Statement of Origin document. 51 = model code. 149 = 149th hull in model production sequence. F = hull made in June. 0 = 1970. 73 = model year that boat was finished and ready for delivery to dealer. Hope that helps! er

STUMPPED ! Can't find anything online that helps identifies the boat,as far as year and model .

Can you see the engine serial number? Should be on a plate or stamped in the engine block. At least that should verify the age, unless the engine was replaced at some point. er
