Canvas

Postby tonyiiiafl » January 5th, 2023, 5:38 pm

I am thinking of making a few pieces of canvas .hat means sewing. Sailrite has machines, but I dont want to spend that kind of money. Any input of Singer 15-91 gear driven? I have heard many people have used it. I would cut the stitching from the canvas surround, then use the old glass as a pattern and sew back in. I know it is harder than it sounds but I am able to make it happen.

Are you replacing the canvas or the clear vinyl?
If the clear vinyl, sew the new vinyl in, then cut out the old vinyl.
Thanks

Vinyl. Canvas is good. When you say sew in new than cut out old I am not following how this is being done

You cut out a piece of vinyl. Sew it to the interior side.. Then cut out the old vinyl with a sharp razor.
If you don't do it this way. You will never ever match what was there.
You'll need a stout machine. You'll be going through a couple layers of sunbrella and vinyl.
Thanks

We used a singer heavy duty from walmart, lol, it worked pretty good believe it or not, and went through several layers of sumbrella canvas just fine. We figured we aren’t gonna start a business so there is no need in buying something that would last forever.

I just bought a Singer 4452, so I am getting closer to trying thi stuff out. I am just done with canvas makers who give a time frame then it is doubled out. I am not going to be able to pattern panels, but if canvas in good condition I am sure I can replace the Eisenglass! Stay tuned.

I learned to do several things when I got my sairite machine. I think you'll enjoy doing these kinds of projects too. also, I ve watched alot of different videos on how to with canvas etc on boats. Learned alot. Keep in mind sailrite has alot of how to and are very good with customer questions. I know you have a clone just don't tell anyone. :-D . Post some of your work when you get to that point. Good luck!
