Canvas Panels

I got the O’Sea vinyl today, along with proper tools. My rex 607Z (Sailrite clone) is at teh ready. However, I am at a loss of direction. My panels I am replacing the vinyl in are pretty well made. I was told to stitch the new over the old, however, I don't think this will look good.

I know some say if I remove the old vinyl, I may lose the shape. SO, I was thinking of taping the old panel down to a table so shape is preserved. Use the seam ripper and remove the old vinyl. Use as a pattern, use basting tape to slide the new vinyl into the fabric channel. The Sunbrella is still pretty stiff, so it is not floppy. Then once fastened in with the tape on bOTH sides, remove from the table and stitch in. Here is what the side panel looks like. Ides? Advice?..To be continued!

Very informative! I was going to do it this way to start with. However, when I saw that the rest of it has a flap cover over front and back, was thinking it may look odd with teh one panel just left exposed on teh inside. I just heard that Sunbrella makes a type of piping to sew onto the new vinyl to cover the unfinished seam.I am checking that out now. Thank you!!!

Well, the struggle from within has won. I am going to take a leap of faith. I will fasten down the panel I am replacing the vinyl window on to a piece of plywood, or perhaps duct tape to a drafting table. I will then rip the rest of teh stitches out, remove the old piece of vinyl. Use it as a template to cut the new. Then, as I have a 1” “slot” that the current window goes into, will base tape with 1/2” 0r 3/4” basting tape the new piece in on both sides, so the canvas will be adhered to the vinyl. Then I should be able to remove the fastened down panel from the table and stitch it in. I understand the layove of vinyl on teh inside, but cant look at 2 panels with the interior glass showing and the rest with it not. Wish me luck, i am going in. Oh, did I tell you I have NEVER used a sewing machine before? I am selling the Singer 4452 I bought and never use3d, selling the used Rex 607Z and bought a brand new Rex (Sailrite clone) for the project. I am still saving a lot of $$$. I will be doing one panel next Saturday, so stay tuned!

So Tony , I have a question.....knowing that windows shrink considerably over time, do you compensate for that or just sew the new in exactly where the old was.

Maybe it would be obvious if there was some visible puckering, I don't really know.....good luck and keeps the pics coming.

I am interested to know how it goes. I recently commisioned a large local canvas place to do the aft curtains on my 396
Carver. I'm goining to save the old set and replace 2 panels that blew out in a ferocious wind storm about 6 weeks ago.
My boat is stored in the water in NJ.
I can hardly believe what they charge for a few panels anymore.

Looking at the panel, the vinyl is right to the edge of the canvas. I am going to cut exactly same size, then painstakingly sew it in. I always have to tug at the canvas when putting it up in the spring. I was getting concerned about losing the shape. However, I think by anchoring it down to the table I think i will be OK.

Paulr, canvas is insane. All of mine less the bimini and 2 side panels and aft hardtop to arch was $12,600.00. I just have a hard time forking over another $4900.00 to complete. The panels I have are in like new as far as the canvas part goes.
