There is a vent filter also....

That's a fuel/air separator that helps prevent fuel from spitting out the vent during refueling or from a full tank in rough seas.

Glad the smell wasn't due to a bad tank but where were the fumes coming from? There shouldn't have been any fuel leaking inside the boat because the tank was overfilled.

I agree, must be a loose fitting or weathered hose somewhere in that system. Fuel fill hoses have a habit of rotting and getting cracks.....

Last fall, I filled as usual for winter storage, on a cool day in November, and then found on a later warmer day that gasoline was flowing out the vents. I could not get a 3/8" OD hose in far enough into the fill port to suck out more than about 3/4 of a gallon. It worked, but....

...a few warmer days later, same overflow! So another 3/4 gal pumping finally stopped it, but that's the last time I top off completely before storage. Same risk for warming up in the spring, of course.

That is exactly why most boat yards / storage facilities have a rule about gas level in tanks. Typically, no more than 3/4 tank filled. Glad there were no flame sources in the area. Yes, you may have some more siphoning to do soon. Good luck! er

Cooler, thanks, that certainly makes good sense! But strangely, no yard had ever mentioned it, and I always thought that there was enough expansion room built into tanks to allow for this. How wrong I was, but now educated! I will start more siphoning to get a jump on it!

Weathered hose...probably contributed to the gas smell.
And that...air/fuel vent...not working...it's original...1997! Going to replace all of them.
Tank was drained. Free gas for the neighborhood!
The first day...I tried to siphon out fuel...wasn't able to get the siphon hose into the actual tank...and instead siphoned some gas that was in the hose close to the neck connection...about a cups' worth...then ended up removing the panels and accessing the actual sending unit and siphoned out 15 gallons. Following morning....no fume smell.
The over fill is the problem.
Ended up having a siphon party and drained the tank.
I am greatly...thankful....to the help from youse.
Saved me thousands of...dollars!
With the 120 gallon tank empty...that aft area is 1000 lbs. lighter.
Carver manual...we have...a lot of....incorrect info and/or missing information.
This particular site..for Carver boats is...a blessing.
Even worth paying for a membership!
Unfortunately...I will have more questions and potential issues and will be posting here!

Heh man...you did it right...didn't put it off and got to the bottom of the problem quickly....the cost of a little fuel is worth it in my opinion....and think of the friends who owe you now.......
