Re: Swim deck ROT

Post by KyleR »

Bumping this up as we have the same issue and I'm planning to make the repairs around June when we haul out for some other maintenance items.

We have a 396 with the swim platform with the 6-8" void between the top and bottom sections as mentioned above in the post by "g36", and it appears the rot is limited to the top section.

So, has anyone actually done this repair on this design of a swim platform? I'm particularly interested in the idea of cutting off the top layer of the fiberglass (the part with the diamond non-skid) in a large piece, recoring the upper section, then reattaching that layer.
Then use fairing compound to blend the seam where I made the cuts. Does that seem plausible? What would be the appropriate way to reattach that old layer to the new core?

Again, any insights are greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!

There is a great thread on here somewhere where one of the members did a re-core on several parts of his deck. slit the non-skid and removed sections, then removed the old damaged core and replaced with new, then put the non-skid back and filled in the sections just as you describe. Lots of pics too. I tried poking around to see if I could put a link in here but couldn't find it. If you poke around enough you might run across it, or perhaps some other member remembers it and can point you in the right direction.

Poked around some more and found the thread. I thought it was in the "Projects" forum but it was right here in the Gen Repairs and Maint.
