shaft seals

The marina didn’t “exercise” the packing nuts on shaft seals like I always ask. This year is a di$a$ter. The starboard would not budge. The port did but they were not happy with it. So, the had to unbolt the couplers, pull shafts back and whatever they did to get the shaft log out. I am just looking at it and saying if they had exercised it, then i would not be in thi$ predicament. At $172.00/hour, this is going to be expensive.

Wonder what kind of tools they were using, or if they were working on left-hand threads and didn't know it!

Ya pretty common. It's usually on the Starboard side. Rooky move if that's the case.

I am not sure what they were trying to do.....but if it actually turns out to be the righty loosey side then its on them for not knowing what they are doing IMO......

I agree fully. However try to argue that point. Their mechanics have been around a long time. Last person who complained was not offered storage the next winter. Storage is a covered commodity

I'd have to admit, the first time I worked on a twin-screw boat I had a heck of a time loosening that starboard side. Luckily, I had worked with some left-hand lug nuts in the past - and snapped one of those off before I learned about them!. So I looked closely at the threads and saw they were reversed. Swapped the wrenches around and OOMPH! they came loose!

Luckily my shafts have the (2) nut packing glands, no giant nuts.
